Relationship with Te Taura Whiri o te reo Māori
The board met with Te Taura Whiri o te reo Māori | Māori Language Commission to learn from their experience of turning strategy into action. This kōrero was valuable as we look to effectively implement the NZSL Strategy 2026-2036, so it delivers real benefits for the Deaf community. This is a relationship we intend to continue.
Timeline for NZSL Community Grants
The timeline for NZSL Community Grants is changing to slightly later in the year. We know these grants are important for supporting community-led initiatives, so we’ll share more details in January to help you plan ahead.
Recruitment
Recruitment for the Director NZSL Strategy and Governance is underway. This is an important leadership position to help drive the strategy and support the community. Applications close on 31 January 2026 – please share the advert with anyone you think might be interested.

20th Anniversary of NZSL as an official language
Next year marks the 20th anniversary of NZSL being recognised as an official language of Aotearoa New Zealand. We’re planning celebrations to honour this milestone and will share details soon so you can be part of it.
Launch of NZSL Strategy 2026-2036
On 17 November 2025, we celebrated the official launch of the NZSL Strategy. This is a significant step forward for the Deaf community and everyone who values NZSL. We’ve started developing the NZSL Strategy Action Plan. This will have practical steps to achieve the goals of the strategy and strengthen NZSL across Aotearoa.
New Advisor joins the team

Work with Te Papa
A big thank you to Te Rōpū Kaitiaki for their recent visit to Te Papa and wānanga with Te Taura Whiri o te reo Māori. Your mahi continues to guide and strengthen the NZSL Strategy.

Work on interpreter standards will move forward soon. These standards are important for ensuring high-quality NZSL interpretation across Aotearoa.
