Recording the history of Wellington Deaf Society
The aim of this project was to digitise Wellington Deaf Society materials such as club newsletters, board minutes/reports, newspaper articles, photographs, to other significant written documentation dated from 1940s onwards, including filming members memories of some events.
All WDS materials, including those collected from WDS members, were digitised with NZMS, a professional digitisation company. Digitised materials include photos, meeting minutes, reports, old files, memorabilia, and newsletters. Items of clothing, chattels and trophies were cleaned, repaired, and prepared for photography.
Going through all digital files helped the history subcommittee to pick up points of interest to compile a historical timeline, and to group materials into different areas. Thirty current and former WDS members were filmed sharing their stories about selected digitised items for the visual timeline. All digitised materials were uploaded to the WDS website, and we now have a vast historical collection which members can access.
WDS is delighted our storage room is a lot tidier and all documents are organised. All people involved with this project learnt more about WDS history. A website launch was held on 2nd February to celebrate the completion of this massive project.
