The New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Board is delighted to announce the appointment of five members to Te Rōpū Kaitiaki, including a new Chair.

Established in 2022, Te Rōpū Kaitiaki serves as the Turi Māori advisory group to the NZSL Board, offering valuable insights on decisions that impact Turi Māori. Like the NZSL Board, Te Rōpū Kaitiaki convenes four times a year, with two of its members participating in NZSL Board meetings to maintain strong collaboration.

Leading the way as the newly appointed Chair is Rāhera Turner (Waikato-Tainui, Ngāti Mahuta, Te Patupō, and Ngati Tūwharetoa), who will work closely with Catherine Greenwood, the Chair of the NZSL Board, to strengthen the partnership between both groups.

A fresh perspective comes with the appointment of Brooklyn West (Ngāti Kuri), who brings a strong youth voice to Te Rōpū Kaitiaki. Brooklyn's approach aligns with their mokopuna-centred decision-making to ensure younger generations are heard.

Meanwhile, continuity and expertise remain at the heart of Te Rōpū Kaitiaki with the reappointment of:

  • Haamiora Te Maari (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, Kai Tahu)
  • Mita Moses (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Wai)
  • Stevie Aiono (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu ki te Wairoa).

With these appointments, Te Rōpū Kaitiaki is well-positioned to uphold its commitment to supporting and advocating for Turi Māori within the NZSL Board’s decision-making framework and maintaining momentum for the Action Plan led by Te Rōpū Kaitiaki.

Finally, the Board would like to acknowledge Eric Matthews who ends his term with Te Rōpū Kaitiaki. Eric has worked hard to make sure the voice of rangatahi Turi Māori was included in the Action Plan and in any advice provided to the Board.
