An action plan to make New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) more visible and accessible has been launched by the NZSL Board today.
The action plan for the 14 months to June 2027 follows the launch of the new 10-year NZSL strategy late last year.
This action plan is the start of bringing the strategy to life,” says NZSL Board Chair Catherine Greenwood.
Progress relies on government agencies, organisations, educators, the Deaf community and NZSL users working together.
Actions are being carried out in 5 key areas:
- acquisition and learning
- evidence and data
- Deaf and NZSL workforce
- public sector
- celebrating NZSL.
Key actions include hosting a Deaf Education Future Forum to strengthen learning and support for Deaf learners and address gaps in Deaf education.
Work will continue on NZSL interpreter standards as well as the development of a interpreter workforce strategy to identify training needs and system improvements.
A forum on NZSL and artificial intelligence will also be held to explore the opportunities and risks the technology offers and support ethical, Deaf-led innovation.
The NZSL Board will be checking progress so it can learn what is working and what is not.
This is the start of a journey for our vision of everyone being aware of, using and accepting NZSL; everyone, everywhere, every day, says Greenwood
